December 31, 1941
Dear Diary,
I have never written in a diary before but with all that is going on in the world around me I feel that it is important to document these events. The year started out as usual. There was turmoil in Europe but America was trying to stay out of it. There is this man Hitler in Germany who is causing a big mess. I think he is trying to take over the entire world. There is not much anyone can really do about it. He was not bothering us over here in America but his ideas are scary. He blames Germany’s issues on the Jewish people. He wants to get rid of them across all of Europe. He wants to take over Europe and there is even talk of him killing Jewish people. I know he has been removing the Jews from their homes and taking away their rights. Like I said, America was staying out of it. History was made when our current President FDR was inaugurated for the third time. This has never happened before! I think it is because he has been good for us. He has brought about so many good things to this country. It is hard to imagine a better president. He will be around for a while. I also saw what I believe is the best movie that will ever be made, Citizen Kane! I went and saw it as many times as I could afford! I hope it never leaves the theaters. I have no way of watching it at home. This year they finished the Mt. Rushmore project. It has taken forever. It sounds really interesting; it is supposed to be huge. I want to go see it but it is out in the middle of nowhere and I do not have the money. Maybe I will start saving up but with my job that is going to take awhile. For now the pictures in the newspaper will have to be enough. I know what you are thinking diary, “this stuff seems typical, nothing really to write home about”. Well I would have to agree until Dec 7. I told you before we were staying out of the war in Europe but out of nowhere the Japanese decided to attack our base in Pearl Harbor. I will be honest with I had no clue we had a base out there but I am still mad! They say thousands of people died and a large part of our fleet was destroyed. I was mad, the whole country was mad. Then to top it all off Japan and Germany declared war on us, so much for trying to stay neutral. Well of course we turned around and declared war on them as well. Now it looks like were getting into this fight. I think it is going to be bad. It seems as if every country is involved. I guess we will wait and see. I think that I am going to keep writing to you diary. I have a feeling these next few years are going to be big.
